Simply Precious Baby Blanket
by Rachelle Olsen
Please describe and tell us about your baby blanket.
I crocheted this baby blanket for my cousin Jenny when she was expecting her first child.
What yarn and needles did you use and where did you get them? Why did you pick this yarn?
The yarn I used was "Baby Sparkle" from Herrschners, and I love the extra shimmer it gives to the finished blanket. I used a size G (4.25mm) Boye crochet hook from a set I received years ago as a birthday gift, and the coordinating ribbon was purchased at Jo-Ann Fabrics.
Tell us more about your design. Was it inspired by another pattern? Why did you pick those colors?
This elegant design is called "Simply Precious" and is available from Herrschners. I love the shell stitch used in the center panel, the lacy V-stitch border, and the coordinating ribbon tied at each corner. Since Jenny was expecting a girl, I chose to use the color pink
Did you run into any problems when knitting your baby blanket? How long did it take you to knit?
It took me a couple tries to get the right number of stitches on the first row of the border (the foundation row which goes down the long side of the center panel). And I actually ran out of yarn and had to get a bit extra for the last few rounds.
This blanket took me about 4 months to crochet, but I was busy with grad school at the time and could only work on it for a couple hours a week. I could probably crochet another one in only a few weeks if I were working on it full time. The finished size is approximately 35" x 40".
Anything else you'd like to share about your baby blanket or knitting in general?
I loved this pattern so much that I've since used it to make four additional baby blankets in different pastel colors. Crocheting has been my primary hobby for the past seven years, and I'm always looking for fun new projects so that I can learn a variety of techniques.
