Sheldon Blanket for William
(El Dorado, AR)
Sheldon Blanket with Monkey Toy in Pocket
Please describe and tell us about your baby blanket.
This blanket was knit for a friend's baby, William, who is due in early March. I decided to knit a blanket for her because she is one of the few friends I know that will genuinely appreciate a handmade gift, flaws and all. After all, she painted a beautiful picture for my baby girl when she was born!
What yarn and needles did you use and where did you get them? Why did you pick this yarn?
I used Knit Picks Comfy Worsted in Planetarium, Sea Foam, and Fedora. I poured through yarn reviews online and this seemed to be the one that would suit my needs perfectly. I was looking for something super soft and super washable :) Let me assure you, this yarn is a dream to knit with! I also used Knit Picks Nickel Plated interchangeable needles in size 7. Yarn and needles were purchased at knitpicks.com.
Tell us more about your design. Was it inspired by another pattern? Why did you pick those colors?
Originally, I picked the Sheldon Blanket because of the super cute pocket on the front! I thought it would set the blanket apart from the others that she may receive. At the same time, I hope that it serves a functional purpose for toys, pacis, and anything else that may end up in there :)
Did you run into any problems when knitting your baby blanket? How long did it take you to knit?
I started the blanket on January 4th, 2011. I would have started it sooner but I was out of town when the yarn arrived. Oh, the agony of waiting to squish new yarn! I finished the blanket on February 7th, 2011. I didn't run in to any problems. The pattern was very easy to follow and kept me interested with the change of colors throughout.
Anything else you'd like to share about your baby blanket or knitting in general?
I hope that this blanket is special to both mom and baby and I especially hope that it gets tons of use. That's why I made it washable and made sure that it did wash well! Knitting this blanket has inspired me to start a blanket for my 19 month old girl. I only recently started knitting (August 2010) so I didn't knit when she was born. I have already started making her a blanket from Knit Picks Swish DK (also washable!)
