This aviatrix baby hat was knit for my 4 month old daughter. She had tons of bought and handmade hats but she needed a hat that would stay on her head as well as not come down over her eyes (she hates that). The hat looks like an airplane helmet, thus the pattern name aviatrix. The hat also looks like an old school football helmet too. Her ears are kept warm and covered. The chin strap is knit so as to have some stretch to come under her chin and fastens with a button. I ran a running stitch of the pink ella rae yarn around the body of the hat. After finishing this hat, she has yet to wear any of her others.
I used berroco vintage in orange to knit the body of the hat and ella rae lace merino in a sunset pink color to knit the earflaps (yarn doubled). I got both of these yarns from my local yarn shop. I used straight US size 7 and 9 knitting needles. I picked both of these yarns because they are super soft and I felt that my daughter would be comfortable wearing this hat.
I used the pattern Aviatrix baby hat. It is a free download from Ravelry. This pattern is fantastic. The author wrote the pattern so you can custom fit your hat with instructions for 3 different yarn weights and 7 head sizes. The hat is knit flat for super easy construction without having to mess with double pointed needles.
I did not run into any problems knitting this hat. It took me about 2 days working on it off and on.
I strongly recommend making this hat. I have made this hat pattern twice and have been very pleased with it both times.
