Meet the Crafty Mama
Heidi of MommysBusy
is the crafty mother of three who loves working with felt because it is colorful, easy to work with and you can use felt made from recycled materials.
You can also find her at She Creates and on Etsy too under MommysBusy! Somehow, the name "MommysBusy" seems very appropriate!
What lead up to starting MommysBusy?
I started my business to kind of give myself me time and with the hopes that maybe some one would like my things well enough to buy them.
What is your main source of inspiration?
I think my kids definitely give me inspiration, they are always telling me what they think will work or won't. How cute something is. I use them to gauge how other kids might like my toys. I have hopes that any of the toys I make will help a child learn something or create imagination some way no matter how small.
What was your goal when you started out and have you reached it?
I never really had a goal when I started I suppose. Selling at least one thing would have made me very happy. If I had to pick one thing that I want to reach as a goal now it would be getting something of mine produced for wholesale and put in a store or boutique somewhere.
What is your favorite part of your creative process from idea to completion?
I love drawing up the patterns for my things, I go through so many pieces of paper to get just the right one that I am happy with. I can end up with a lot of crumbled up paper all around me before I am done.
What is your least favorite part?
My least favorite part is taking the pictures. I never seem to have enough daytime to get a good picture with out have kids saying "no take one of me" Or someone trying to get a body part in the picture too.
When do you find the time to create?
I do most of my creating at night long after the kids go to bed. I have had alot of late nights. I think most of my ideas come to me when I am laying in bed before I fall asleep. I can squeak out some time in the mornings too, to finish up a project I may be working on when the kids are eating breakfast.
What are your tips on balancing business and family?
This is a subject I don't think I have any advice on I have to fight myself to not want to get in a few more stitches here or there and instead go eat a pretend playdough ice cream cone my daughter made. I really want to be better at setting a more ridgid schedule for when work time is and when family time is.
What do you do to ensure that you don't burn out?
I will go days without sewing or painting anything just to give myself a break, when I get back to it I feel so much better about the quality of things I make and the fun I am having while making them.
Are you crafty in other ways? If so, what do you make?
I paint too. I have just started to add things I have painted to my shops. I would consider my painting cutesy not really artsy.
Any future business or creative plans?
I would really like to get a contract with a toy store to mass produce something I have made, that would be awesome. As for the creative plans, just to keep on making fun toys for kids.
If you had a full week with no children or other responsibilities, what would you do?
This question has given me the most trouble I think. I love to clean when the kids are not around (and who doesn't) so I think I would end up doing that for most of the time. Maybe I would throw in some time for me to just sit around and do nothing with no one saying mom, MOMMY!!!...The last few days of that week I would sit at my desk and draw up new patterns or reorganize my felt stash (you can never do that too many times).
