Jacob's Blanket of Many Colors

Please describe and tell us about your baby blanket.

I made this blanket for my (now) one-year old son, Jacob. I started the blanket when he was 4 months old and it took me 7 months to complete it! The blanket is 40 colors - no color is repeated, except for the trim. The blanket is square and measures approximately 3 feet by 3 feet - a large crib blanket.

What yarn and needles did you use and where did you get them? Why did you pick this yarn?
I used a size 6 "Addi Turbo" circular needle which I had in my knitting collection. The yarn is "Tahki Cotton Classic" which was a dream to work with. I purchased it online at Yarnmarket because they had over 120 colors to chose from, which was a variety I was unable to find at any local store. I picked this yarn because it was recommended by the book in which I found the pattern (Mason-Dixon Knitting). I love the yarn and at $5.50 a skein, it was relatively affordable considering the amount I needed (40 skeins!). I actually have enough left over yarn to make another blanket, which I plan to do in reverse (dark to light)!

Tell us more about your design. Was it inspired by another pattern? Why did you pick those colors?
I initially found the pattern online at Ravelry and loved the rainbow colors used in other Log Cabin-style blankets. I then bought the book with the pattern, Mason-Dixon Knitting, and then had to chose colors. In picking the colors (there were over 120 to chose from!) I wanted something that my son wouldn't grow out of, so I decided to pick darker colors rather than pastels. I thought the rainbow effect, as inspired by other knitters on Ravelry, would "pop" the best and I'm thrilled with the final product!

Did you run into any problems when knitting your baby blanket? How long did it take you to knit?
Honestly, I didn't have many problems! It was a very easy blanket to make (all garter stitch!) and I loved knitting it. I think the hardest part was towards the end when the blanket started to get heavy on the needles and my hands would hurt from all the weight while knitting! It took me 7.5 months to knit (less time than I thought it would take!)

Anything else you'd like to share about your baby blanket or knitting in general?
This blanket gets comments from perfect strangers everywhere I go! I think it's a combination of the bright colors and the fact that it looks intricate. It's a wonderful blanket - I can't wait to make more! It is truly a blanket that anyone can knit and the color palates are endless.

Stunning colors. Love the
quilted" look. I can see this blanket lasting longer than the baby years.
