Family Ties

Family Ties in Two Countries
My friend has strong family ties both in Canada and the U.S., with relatives both places. Even though the baby and her immediate family live in South Carolina, her mother spent many years in Canada as a young person. The baby's grandparents, to whom she is very close, had also lived in Canada for many years. For the baby quilt, I wanted something unique that would, in a quilt-y sort of way, give tribute to the various family ties. When I discovered a free maple leaf quilt pattern at VictorianaQuiltDesigns.com , I knew it could work. It was designed as a fall leaves pattern, but in red and white, it took on the Canadian look I wanted. The quilt backing is one of those great all-over American flag prints, and was perfect, since I wanted a quilt that represented family ties in BOTH countries. I had fun making the mini-quilt for the baby's big sister. When giving baby gifts to families with older siblings, we often like to include a gift for the older sibling, too. In this case, the mini-quilt was just the thing. |
