Cookies&Cream is a cozy baby hat in a modern style with a nod to vintage and dessert. The rose and the creamy edging give off a feminine air, tempered with distinct flavor and sweetness—just like the baby!
I knit together two delicious yarns. One, the chocolate brown is a hand-me-down and all I know about it is that it's a great cotton blend, sport-weight, with nearly invisible green and red fibers that give it a soft tweedy appearance. The other yarn is a creamy acrylic sock yarn. The contrasting effects of these two yarns makes the texture of the overall product really pop. I used a size seven circular needle from my favorite local knitting shop.
This pattern is my original design. I'm in love with vintage styles—mainly 1920's and 1930's. The Cloche is a great feminine shape that means it stays on a baby's very round head with ease. The Cloche brim is knit in a garter stictch with a cast-on-cast-off edging that gives it texture and undulation. The band area was achieved using a few rows of stockinette with eyelets. The main body of the hat is 1x1 rib ending in my signature rib decrease with the cream yarn forming a little “button” closure on top. The band was knit using the cream sock yarn in a 1x1 rib for flatness and worked from side to side for stretch. Using a small crochet hook, I used the cream yarn to crochet the tiny border going only into the white strands in the hat. The flower is a removable pin that I also made.
The Cookies&Cream took me two days to create, and it took many tries. Experimenting with the design to tweak and get the size and gauge right didn't take me as long as I feared it might.
Knitting is a great stress-reliever for me, and it teaches me so much patience. I love to design my own things, and it's such a wonderful creative outlet! This Cookies&Cream hat is for my first child, a daughter who is expected around Valentine's day, and she will definitely look like a little bon-bon in it when it fits her a year or so later!
