Chunky Blue Hat

CHUNKY BLUE HAT
I wanted a hat for some newborn baby photos. I wanted a really chunky, make-a-statement kind of hat. But it had to be quick and easy to knit - I was pregnant with twins and we didn't want to find out what we were having, so I had to knit 2 pink ones and two blue ones so we had all possiblities covered!! (Had two boys, BTW)
I live in New Zealand - the wool came from Spotlight. I used 'Manor' wool (35metre/50gram ball), and size 15mm needles (size US 18 or 19). I wanted vibrant colour and plenty of texture.
I based it on a lionbrand hat pattern, but adapted it to suit. I used very chunky wool, knitted it double thickness, with enormous needles. So the one pictured is on Mitchell when he was 3 months old. I cast on 24 stitches, did about 4 rows of stocking stitch and then started decreasing to shape the top. Finish it off with a pompom that's nearly as big as the baby - gorgeous!!!!
This took under and hour start to finish including stitching up and adding the pompom - so simple.
