Please describe and tell us about your baby blanket.
This was a pattern I came up with because I wanted to make my sister something extra special for her first child. We both love Celtic art, so I wanted to try cabling some knot work panels. I also wanted a variety of textures for the baby to explore, but something that would be soft and pretty. It took a while for me to come up with the combination of stitches that I liked the best, but I love how it turned out.
What yarn and needles did you use and where did you get them? Why did you pick this yarn?
KnitPicks Shine Sport in Sage knit on size 5 Harmony wood circular needles.
I love the Shine Sport because it is baby-friendly and super soft. Every baby blanket I've made with it has been well-loved.
Tell us more about your design. Was it inspired by another pattern? Why did you pick those colors?
I've always loved celtic knotwork, but didn't see many simple patterns I liked. It was my first try at cabling, so I checked with some stitch dictionaries and came up with a pattern that had some pretty cables and some different textures that the baby could explore.
I personally love green, but my sister requested some light and neutral for her new baby, so the sage Shine Sport was a good choice.
Did you run into any problems when knitting your baby blanket? How long did it take you to knit?
It was a learning experience for me with cabling, especially since I was making it up as I went. I did learn the hard way that cabling will pull in the width of your piece, so my top and bottom edges were a bit wider than the body.
It took me several months to draft, test, and knit the whole piece. The finished dimensions were about 36"x 36"(I believe, I forgot to take exact measurements after!)
Anything else you'd like to share about your baby blanket or knitting in general?
I can't wait to try another cabled project after this one. My only regret is that my sister lives so far away so I can't keep touching that blanket!!
