Animal afghan

by Karen Taylor
(Mercer Island, WA)

I crocheted this blanket for my grandson. When I saw the pattern I was very interested in making the blanket. It looked almost knitted, but it was crocheted! I had to do it.

I used Caron Simply Soft yarn. I use this a lot for baby blankets, because it is soft yet durable. It can go easily in the washer and dryer. A must, if you ask me, for a baby or toddler blanket.

I got the pattern from the booklet: Leisure Arts #4439, A Year of Baby Afghans, Book 4. The afghan is the August pattern.

The pattern was easy, but the way it was written in the book made it hard to keep track of where I was once I got to the animal section. For this reason, I created a spreadsheet from the written words that showed the type of stitch and the number of stitches for each round in the animal section of the blanket. Once I had my "chart" I was able to keep track of where I was with no problem.

This is one of my all-time, favorite blankets.

Beautiful blanket. Has anyone changed this to a knit pattern?

This animal afghan is really lovely. I would like to try it. Is the pattern still available? I am living in the Netherlands and do not know the book it came from.

Where or how can I get this pattern? I am having my first Great grandson in August and would love to make this. The picture looks like it is knitted which is what I know how to do best and am learning to crochet. Any help would be appreciated. It's just beautiful.

Your blanket is beautiful! I am leaving for vacation in a couple days and need to begin this project while I'm gone. What type of yarn and what quantity does this pattern call for? I'm afraid I won't get the pattern in time to buy the yarn! Thank you! Janice

Hi I really liked how your blanket came out so I purchased a book of my own to attempt it. I too am having a hard time with the animals. Would you happen to still have the spreadsheet that you created and if so would you mind sharing them with me? The squares where easy because you just needed to count 9 each time but the animals I've lost count so I know I probably have more than I need.
